My great-grandmother’s delicate old farmhouse on the prairies of Kansas is the inspiration for this work. As a child, I went through the doorways of this farmhouse, unknowing of the history of the house and unaware of the many people who passed through. The importance of these doorways grows out of the perceptions a door can hold. Doors absorb memory, weather, the lightness or darkness of a season or the passing of time. Doors here are a metaphor for time. Time is an active, specific dimension. The process in this search is important. I work on the floor to create the piece from all directions. The surface eventually relates to the content and reveals that each brushstroke evokes the time and memory that I seek.
